“Don’t you walk away from me! We have to talk!” Seth shouts from behind me.

“Oh you wanna talk now?” I throw over my shoulder in a singsong voice, remembering how much he used to hate that when we were kids.

Out of nowhere, he reaches and yanks me back into his chest. I freeze for only a second before my fight or flight senses kick in and I struggle against the hold. He grips me tighter to keep me with him, causing the sweats to begin as tunnel vision takes over and I start to hyperventilate.

Lost in a trance, I forget I'm the badass Phoenix and turn into scared little Zoey.

“Let - me - go,” I stammer between breaths. “Do-nt touch me. Please don’t touch me.” I feel my body spinning and then hot breath on my face making me panic even more. I try to beat on his chest but it has little impact.

“No, no, no.” A voice penetrates my head and helps to ground me. “Zoey, it's me. It’s Seth. I’m here. Come back to me. Please.” His pleas are desperate enough that I start to control my breathing but I can't seem to fully calm down and I know why. “It’s me, Spence. I’ve got you.”

“Don’t touch me. I don't - like to be touched!" I pant.

Without another word, he lets go of me and I take a deep breath, then another and another until I've got myself under control. I feel behind me until I touch the textured wallpaper in the corridor. As soon as I know it’s there I step back until I'm against it. No one can come up behind me now.

I refuse to open my eyes, but I know he’s still there. I can smell his aftershave. The scent calms me more than I care to admit. When my breathing is finally under control, I know I may as well face the music, so I open my eyes. A foot away from me, Seth stands stiff as a board. His hands are fisted at his side as though he is desperate to stop himself from reaching for me. Good choice, but the look on his face gives me a weird pain in my chest. The usual glow in his eyes are gone and they’ve been replaced with emptiness I've never seen before. Something squeezes my heart.

“I’m so sorry Zoey. I didn’t know it was that bad.”

“How would you know? You haven’t been around.” I feel my energy returning.

“Well, I'm here now. I want to know what the fuck happened to you,” he demands and a stubborn glint appears. This gets my back up.

“You don’t get to know anything and you certainly don’t get to demand sweet-f-all from me.” I straighten my clothes so I don’t have to look at him.

“How can I help you if I don't know what you’ve been through?” he huffs as I'm being unreasonable and this really gets my goat.

“I don’t need your help. Not now, not ever. The sooner you realise that the better.
